By MARGALIT FOX NY Times, Published: February 18, 2012
He crossed the Atlantic because it was there, and the Pacific because it was also there.
He made both crossings in a rowboat because it, too, was there, and because the lure of sea, spray and sinew, and the history-making chance to traverse two oceans without steam or sail, proved irresistible.
In 1969, after six...

Bjork as Music Teacher
“Using little besides a simple microphone, she was a physics class on two legs, sculpting vowels into fanciful shapes, and vividly animating Biophilia’s song metaphors, which connect the human heart to the universe beyond.”
She is like poetry. I wish I could have been there.

Swallowed by a whale
Here’s a great article by a guy who wanted to find out if any man had ever really truly been swallowed by a whale. He includes so many interesting stories like this one…
If, I’ll pretend for a moment, you were swallowed, it would happen like this: You would first be chewed. Sperm whales’ teeth are 8 inches long – longer than most blades in your knife drawer. Then you would be...

New York November 10, 1958
Dear Thom:
We had your letter this morning. I will answer it from my point of view and of course Elaine will from hers.
First — if you are in love — that’s a good thing — that’s about the best thing that can happen to anyone. Don’t let anyone make it small or light to you.

Miso
This link is for my friend Aaron Choe who made the most amazing miso soup the other day. His secret: fatty pork, of course. Plus a little drizzle of sesame oil on top that just makes everything nutty and delicious…sigh. It was the heartiest miso soup I’ve ever had and it is now a winter soup favorite. Back to the link tho — I was reading this Smitten Kitchen recipe for...

Winter Lentils
In a pinch to do something different for dinner last night, I scoured my favorite food blogs for something easy, nutritious and didn’t involve stir-fry. Stay at Stove Dad came to the rescue with a delicious red lentil soup. It’s lemony, gingery and has cinnamon hints and a touch of spice. I actually got a little nervous about the soup being too cinnamony and lemony and took out the...
An Expat Movement?
For anyone thinking of moving to Asia, check out the NYTimes article by Jonathan Levine.
Here’s my favorite line:
“To the occupiers and their sympathizers, I say vote — not with the ballot, but with your feet. Now that your encampment has disbanded, don’t just leave Zuccotti Park: leave America.”

Chocolate Tart
Chalice made a chocolate tart from a Jamie Oliver recipe awhile ago and I photographed. I couldn’t find the time to edit the photos during the holiday season but finally, I got around to posting the photos. The chocolate tart was super dark, rich and delicious. Plus it was super easy to make. For the recipe, go to Chalice’s blog. For more photos check out my flickr!
